March-11th celebration

Continuing the tradition of celebrating March 11th, the Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania, together with the Lithuanian community and Lithuanian friends in Hungary the documentary film "Leap" by director G. Žickytė was screened at the Embassy in Budapest.

Ambassador Mindaugas Rukštelė congratulated the participants on the upcoming Lithuanian holiday and reminded them that March 11th is the Lithuanian Freedom Day. The large-scale war launched by Russia against Ukraine two years ago brought back to reality that freedom is not a given. "It takes our will, our focus and our actions to ensure that we do not lose our freedom," the Ambassador stressed.

The film "Leap" is the Lithuanian film that participated in the most international film festivals and received the most awards in recent years. It is a powerful documentary about the story of a Lithuanian sailor's desperate leap to freedom and his imprisonment during the Cold War, which rallied the Lithuanian-American community in the US to take civic action for the release of the sailor, S. Kudirka.

Members of the Lithuanian community in Hungary, as well as guests from Lithuania visiting Budapest, discussed the importance of Lithuanian community mobilization and the peculiarities of activities in Hungary, as well as return programs, the upcoming elections, and the importance of the referendum on the amendment of Article 12 of the Constitution.
