Lithuanian Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys participated in the opening events of "Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture 2022" in Serbia

The Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys hopes that the programmes of the capitals of culture will bring artists from different countries more closer together and open up new opportunities for them.   "The impressive opening of the Novi Sad 2022 programme has become a great introduction to the entire ambitious programme of this Serbian city. It aims not only to promote the name of Novi Sad in Europe, to uphold EU values in this EU candidate country, but also to involve local people as actively as possible in the processes. Its ambitious programme and great attention to the local people that I think links the Novi Sad and Kaunas programmes. It is great that during the year there will be many opportunities for Serbian artists in Lithuania and Lithuanian artists in Serbia to present their works. I believe that the links established will grow stronger and grow into long-term cooperation in the future” – says the minister.

The Novi Sad 2022 and Kaunas 2022 programmes include several cooperation projects between the two European Capitals of Culture. A personal exhibition "Memory of Being" by Marina Abramovic, a world-famous performance artist from Serbia, will be presented in Kaunas. Soon Kaunas Photography Gallery will invite to the exhibition of Serbian creators, Kaunas and Novi Sad will be connected by Kaunas Jazz Festival.

During his visit Minister Simonas Kairys met with Serbian Minister of Culture Maya Gojkovic and discussed further bilateral cooperation and the development of cultural relations between Lithuania and Serbia.
